See the world thru ergo-tinted glasses

Contrary to what most people think, ergonomics is not just something that happens at work. Or just something that has to do with your computer.

There are a number of lengthy definitions of Ergonomics, but here is one that I particularly like: ergonomics is the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.  If you drop the idea of "work" this definition is even better: The study of people's efficiency in their environment.

News Flash! Efficiency isn't just for engineers.

We are all, all about efficiency.  We multi-task; we use on-demand services for shopping, babysitting, ride sharing and salon services; we love a quick and effective workout; and we can't live without our stainless steel water bottles.

And why not?  Because efficiency means getting the most out of what you put in. Why work harder than you need to?

Why make your brain work harder to over-remember or split your attention?  Why spend extra time completing your tasks? Why fatigue your body in awkward positions?

As an Ergonomist, I see ergo everywhere.  From the camera man at a baseball game, to the design of our Apple TV remote, to where we decided to put the silverware in our kitchen -- ergonomics is not just about comfort or pain, its about making life easier; more efficient.  Efficiency is the main event, comfort is just a nice side effect.

I am kicking off this new year with a goal of making more people see the world through ergo-tinted glasses.  My family and friends already get to live with me pointing out good and bad ergo examples in every day life and now you will too!  ENJOY.
